It’s National Work Life Week. It’s run by Working Families, the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers and we are proud to be a part of it. This year’s theme is all about discovering what flexible working means to people from all walks of life and in all sorts of job roles. At Evolving Networks, we support and encourage flexible working. We talk to some of our valuable colleagues to highlight that flexible working is possible no matter what the role involves.
Project Manager
My job is to manage all the new deals and existing projects to delivery, working closely with the service desk team as well as the senior technical team. I schedule the configuration and admin for all projects from when we receive a new deal from the sales team to delivery to the customer. I liaise with the carriers as well as keeping communication with the customer throughout the project.
Flexible working means not being restricted to the office and being able to work from home or to start earlier/finish earlier. Being able to work around appointments or issues.
Since joining the company in January 2024, Evolving Networks have been extremely flexible with me as I have recently become a Dad. My daughter was born in March and leading up to her birth, Evolving Networks have allowed me to attend midwife appointments as well as short notice hospital appointments.
This has helped massively as I’m sure many know how stressful and anxious a pregnancy can be. Allowing me to be by my fiancée’s side helped enormously. After the birth, more appointments which again has allowed me to be at home to be there and support. 6 months on and several sleepless nights later, I am extremely grateful for how supporting Evolving Networks have been since I joined at the beginning of the year.
Project Support Officer
My role involves providing essential support to the Project Manager, ensuring that all projects run smoothly from start to completion. Day-to-day, I help manage project timelines, coordinate with different departments, and handle any administrative tasks that arise, whilst always keeping the client updated with the progress of their project. My role is pivotal in keeping projects on track and supporting the team in achieving our goals efficiently.
Flexible working means having the freedom to balance my professional and personal life in a way that suits my circumstances. It’s about having the ability to adapt my work schedule to accommodate life changes, like moving to a new country. For me, it's been about maintaining my career while also enjoying new experiences and opportunities for personal growth in Dubai.
Evolving Networks has been incredibly supportive of flexible working. When my husband got a job in Dubai, they were open to the possibility of me working remotely. Despite the 3-hour time difference, they allowed me to continue with my part-time hours, which fit perfectly with my new lifestyle. The team ensured my remote setup was smooth, providing all the necessary support to make this transition stress-free.
This flexibility has greatly enhanced my wellbeing, allowing me to enjoy life in Dubai while still being apart of a supportive work environment.
Service Desk Engineer
I am one of the first points of contact within the business for customers with connectivity queries or problems. We must try and identify the issue and categorise it as quickly as possible to ensure the customer is not impacted for a prolonged period of time. There are many other diverse parts to the role, such as, configuring, testing and shipping customer hardware, managing returns of existing hardware and making sure they are fit to be used again and assisting with customer plugins.
Being able to arrive or leave at different times to accommodate out of work scenarios. Helping to promote a healthy work/life balance. Working from home if needed e.g. Boiler repairs. Being able to leave if something crops up in your home life. As long as your work still gets done and you don’t abuse the system and let people know as early as possible.
I’ve recently had some family bereavements, and, on a happier note, my partner recently gave birth to a baby girl. In both instances, I was required to offer support to family members without access to transport to attend multiple medical appointments with them.
In every situation above, I have been able to take an hour here or there to fit in an appointment or drop somebody off where they needed to be without question. Sometimes I’ve taken a morning/afternoon, or occasionally a day if appointments overran by a considerable amount. I always aim to make back as much of the time as possible, but there has never been any concern raised or push back on the time taken from the company.
SD-Wan Solution Specialist
Client relationship management. I speak to our clients to ensure they are maximising their services with us and gaining the maximum value from these.
Flexible working means that I can be at home the moment I finish work. I don’t have a long commute, and I am able to help my children get to their extra curricular hobbies and sports.
I also have more time for myself without the daily commute. Equally I can give my full focus on my job role in between these times. It’s crucial to me that I am able to balance my work and personal life with a large family and the commitments that come with that.
Evolving Networks has enabled me to work from where I need to and when. I am also able to go to the office as often as I want. Due to the long distance between myself and the office I am only required to be there once a month, although I can go more often if I need to, and I am made really welcome there when I do.
We will be celebrating National Work Life Week in the office on the 8th October. To find out more about how you can celebrate National Work Life Week and ideas for wellbeing and flexible working visit National Work Life Week - Working Families
