Celebrating 16 years of innovation

We’ve been delivering resilient, multi-link internet connectivity for 16 years and what better way is there to celebrate and reminisce about our connectivity and innovation development is to talk to Nick Johnson, the CEO and owner of Evolving Networks. We take a trip down memory lane, celebrate our achievements in the last year and share our exciting plans for the future.

1) How did Evolving Networks begin?

It all started over a pizza. I was working for Siemens Technologies, selling managed VPN solutions when the first load balancing technologies started to appear on the market.

I had a good relationship with Nic Elliott, who was one of my biggest customers.  We met for a meal and discussed the potential of developing software to improve connectivity for businesses.  By the end of the meal, we had agreed to quit our jobs and give it a go.

16 years of developing and refining the concept, thousands of implementations later we’re still going – and in fact, we’re going from strength to strength!

2) What has made Evolving Networks unique and innovative over the last 16 years?

The flippant answer is that we had to be.  We self-funded the business and have grown it organically from day one.  That means you have to be lean, and you have to innovate to deliver exceptional service to your customers.

We were first to market in the UK with pro-active monitoring and native, zero touch bi-directional QoS as well as first to automate connectivity benchmarking and pro-active sync rate protection all before 2010.

In more recent years, we were the first to aggregate multi-gbps connectivity and to bring hyper-scaler integration into resilient internet connectivity and we’re not stopping there.

Every industry needs innovators, and that’s what we are doing. We enjoy pushing the technology through the application of the concepts of over engineering, automation and resilience.

But we innovate in every area of our business. We have groundbreaking sales engagement, account management and project functions.

Its fast paced, exciting and invigorating!

3) What are the key successes and achievements over the last few years?

We delivered a 100 site layer 2 SD-WAN with centralised security for a local education authority through the first COVID lockdown.

We then re-engineered the sales engagement process and had a significant win in the defence sector, delivering a carrier resilient, multi-core, global Network as a Service solution based on multi-carrier resilience and a defence in depth security posture.

More recently we have embraced the channel model and built very strong relationships with key MSPs resulting in very innovative customer solutions being deployed in the education sector and significant recent wins in the financial services sector.

4) What are Evolving Networks plans for the next year?

We are going to continue to innovate, our focus on R&D won’t change.  We will also continue to build our relationships with key partners whilst building new relationships with MSPs looking to offer innovative connectivity solutions to their customers.

We are also seeing customers looking to drive efficiencies in their cloud adoption strategy, specifically the rise of hybrid cloud.  We see the adoption of more localised cloud compute strategies, where we deliver cloud capacity from the core of the network via our datacentre presence as a growth area in the short to medium term.

5) What does it mean to you working in technology?

Innovation is what gets me out of bed every morning and excited for the day ahead.  If you feel like you’re on solid ground, you’re not doing something new.

I worked out early in my career that I needed to always be moving forward, working in technology, and specifically leading an innovative, R&D focussed business gives me that challenge!

National Work Life Week – Why flexible working matters

It’s National Work Life Week. It’s run by Working Families, the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers and we are proud to be a part of it. This year’s theme is all about discovering what flexible working means to people from all walks of life and in all sorts of job roles. At Evolving Networks, we support and encourage flexible working. We talk to some of our valuable colleagues to highlight that flexible working is possible no matter what the role involves.
